the  SURNAMES   in relation to my  FAMILY TREE

Most of the family members came from the province Zeeland from the village Bruinisse in the provence of Zeeland in Southern of Holland.

Other old pictures from Bruinisse (since ca.1900)

old pictures from Bruinisse

A several hundred years before Bruinisse (= town of settlement) our family came from Bergen op Zoom (after their flee from Belgium)

"Bergen op Zoom, houdt U vroom, stut de Spaanse scharen -
Bergen op Zoom, be faithful, hold the Spanish troops"

The lines of this song you can hear at the start of this page.
The song was written during the 80 years of war against the Spanish king.
This war was an independency war.
The provinces of Holland wished to be free from the Spanish government because of the high tax and freedom of religion.
In order to achieve this goal Prince William of Orange, count of Holland, became Protestant to oppose the king of Spain, who was catholic.
Bergen op Zoom was long catholic, compared to other Dutch cities: only in 1680 the city became Protestant.
Protestantism became the state religion and the main churches of Bergen op Zoom became Protestant.

The Van Popering family
They were already Protestant long before 1600.
Pieter Michielssen van Poperingen lived in the Molstraat, in the center of B.o.Z.; in a 400 years old and existing house in 2003 !
(see >>> Behind the yellow button below .... the Dutch version than click the button: "Bergen op Zoom " in this website)

Pieter Michielssen, also the oldest ancester with the name van Popering in Bergen op Zoom was a soldier and horseman he was garrisoned at Bergen op Zoom in 1620
Later....the people (and our family) moved from Bergen op Zoom to Tholen and to Bruinisse (in Zeeland Holland), which was very Protestant
